Laura Ingalls Wilder would have turned 159 years old on February 7, 2026. It’s captivating to think about how young Laura might have imagined future generations of fans joyfully celebrating her birthday.  Little did she know back then that she would become a beloved children’s author or that her treasured books would become enduringly popular.

We are grateful that Laura recognized her importance in American history as a firsthand witness to the transformation of the frontier and decided to write about it. As a young girl, she and her family faced relentless challenges of travel, poverty, heartbreak, and illness; however, as an adult author reflecting on her life, Laura chose to highlight the joys, resilience, family bonds, and indomitable pioneer spirit they shared, creating a lasting story of love and strength that has resonated through generations.

As we gather to celebrate Laura’s extraordinary legacy on her birthday, what more fitting location than here in Pepin, where that spirited little pioneer girl reveled in the sprawling embrace of the Big Woods and joyfully dug her toes into the fertile, rich soil of Wisconsin—a scene that unfolded 159 years ago.
