A job at the museum is enjoyable! It’s an opportunity to work in a supportive environment, making our customers feel welcome and helping them enjoy their museum experience. Patient and supportive training is provided.
Museum employees must have the ability to:
- Work independently without management supervision (after training)
- Accurately count cash
- Be friendly and open to conversing with customers
- Learn to operate a digital point-of-sale register
- Tidy up and clean the gift store at the end of each shift
- Lift boxed merchandise (heavy boxes may be taken apart for easier carrying)
- Properly price and restock merchandise as needed
- Move around the museum and gift store
Here’s what a typical day at the museum looks like:
Start of Day:
-Turn on the lights
-Fill the cash drawer
-Unlock door at 10 am
Clerking duties:
-Greet customers as they enter
-Take customers’ admission fees
-Briefly explain the museum’s offerings
-Answer customers’ general questions
-Check in and price new merchandise orders (time permitting)
-Restock shelves
-Keep gift store tidy
End your day (takes 15-20 minutes)
-Turn off the open sign at 5 pm & lock door
-Reconcile the register’s daily sales
-Lock up cash
-Tidy gift store & museum
-Clean bathroom sinks & toilets
-Mop bathroom floor if necessary
-Restock toilet paper and hand towels
-Empty wastebaskets
-Wash smudges on windows
-Turn off lights and lock the doors
