About Us
Locals take great pride in the fact that Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in Pepin, Wisconsin. In September of 1962, a park in Pepin was dedicated the Laura Ingalls Wilder Park, and a historical marker was erected in her memory.
In July of 1974, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society, Inc., was officially organized. Through the generosity of the Pepin business community and the present landowner, the society was fortunate in acquiring three acres of land at the original site of Laura's birth.
Located on a highway, the land has been used for the development of "Little House Wayside." A log cabin has been built to simulate the original hillside house. Trees were planted, picnic facilities added, there are public rest rooms and a well with a hand pump provides water.
The Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society purchase their current building in 1988. It was developed as the Pepin Historical Museum, also known as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum.
The museum features artifacts from Pepin's history as well as items relating to Laura Ingalls Wilder. A well stocked gift shop is also housed within the museum.
In 1994 an adjacent building was purchased for future expansion. Fundraising efforts are currently underway and plans will proceed as the society's goals are reached.
Your contributions will help support these efforts, please visit our "join" page for more information. |
